December, 2020

In the January/ Februray 2021 issue of The Walrus, Giller Prize Finalist Megan Gail Coles chooses Some People’s Children as a favourite book of the year: “Not since Joel Thomas Hynes’s Down to the Dirt has a Newfoundland coming-of-age novel so relentlessly depicted the taxing challenge of surviving adolescence in rural outports. This darkly comedic novel is one of indignities, epiphanies, and hope.”

November, 2020

I recently completed two pieces on the 35th Anniversary of the ArtsNL Awards (links in the Press section). Part of the process involved a photoshoot from genius photographer Ritche Perez. I don’ think I’ve ever looked so good windblown.

October, 2020.  I wrote a piece for Boca De Lupo’s Red Phone at the LSPU Hall and did my first “real life” public reading of 2020 at the Lawnya Vawnya Festival.

It’s an odd time to release a book (odd time for everything, really). I’m very happy to be receiving good feedback on Some People’s Children

Spring, 2020

My second novel, Some People’s Children, is available in print and as an e-book!  It’s an odd time for everything right now, including publishing a new book, but I’m very pleased with the response it’s received.

More details and purchasing information for Some People’s Children can be found under the Books tab. Links to reviews can be found under Press.

If you’d like to hear me read the first chapter, you can check it out here on Breakwater’s YouTube channel. And here’s another picture of the cover which I absolutely love – the original work is We Came at Night by one of my favourite NL artists, Mike Gough.

Spring/Summer 2019

Such an honour to receive the CBC Emerging Artist Award with ArtsNL this weekend. It was an unexpected, wonderful surprise. Congratulations to my fellow finalists Emily Pittman and Meghan Musseau.

(May, 2019) Very relieved to have submitted my thesis for my MA in English (Creative Writing) from Memorial University. It’s a short fiction collection titled No One Knows about Us, twelve stories taking place in contemporary St. John’s where characters deal with secrets: relationships, longings, grudges, addictions, and trickery.

Hopefully it will be available as a real live book in the near future.

Other spring news: I’m honoured to be named as a finalist for this year’s “CBC” ArtsNL Emerging Artist of the Year! The full list of finalists and awards can be found here.

February 21, 2018:

The Greatest Hits of Wanda Jaynes is a finalist for this year’s BMO Winterset Award!

From The Overcast: “This year’s shortlist is composed of 3 stellar novels, by 3 very different writers: a fresh new name in fiction (Bridget Canning), a mid-career multi-hatted artist (Joel Thomas Hynes), and a literary icon (Wayne Johnston). Each author’s novel is radiant for different reasons, proving that the greatest books shine through, no matter what it is that makes them shine.”
